It is one of the major tourist attractions in South Africa. The Cradle of Humankind area boasts 13 excavation sites that are recognized as national heritage sites both. For those wanting to experience the birthplace of humankind firsthand, the official visitor centers for the Cradle of Humankind, Maropeng, and the Sterkfontein Caves, are within an easy hour’s drive from the lodge.

Sterfontein Caves

Within the Sterkfontein Caves, scientists have discovered many hominid and other animal fossils, dating back more than 4-million years, to the birth of humanity. The most important and most famous of these fossils are “Mrs Ples”, a 2.1-million-year-old Australopithecus skull, and “Little Foot”, an almost complete Australopithecus skeleton that is more than 3-million years old.
